Why it’s important to trust your coach

If we’re going to move past our limitations, push through our fears, illuminate our issues, heal our past trauma, soothe our body pain, challenge what we think is the truth & go where we didn’t know was possible, we must develop trust with our coaches. ⁣

But what is trust? Consider this definition as it’s been taught to me: We should trust someone to act as they always have. This is neither positive or negative. It’s what IS. If someone tends to lie, cheat or steal, we can trust that person to do that with us. We can also trust people to be forgiving, honest, and loyal when that’s the way they’ve always been. ⁣

It’s not that people can’t change, because they absolutely can. However, a starting point to trust in them is simply based on what we’ve seen thus far. ⁣

I’ve been told that I’m naturally a trustworthy person. I think it’s because, as a general way of being, I always care about people's best interest, I’m honest, direct, I do what I say I’m going to do and I’m consistent.⁣

Often times, the issue of trust has nothing to do with the coach, and instead has more to do with the client's trust issues. This is something that gets discovered by the coach early on in the relationship. ⁣

Trust issues will make it difficult to tackle new terrain, so one of the first orders of business is getting people to see their trust issues & then to ease off of their resistance.⁣

People with trust issues often struggle because they have a notion as to the way people SHOULD act, and then feel that they’ve had their trust broken because the person acted in way that’s not in accordance with that.⁣

No coach is perfect or without issues, and we all have our own style for sure. ⁣

Sometimes it’s wise to find a coach that suits our preference of style, but alternatively there can be more benefit in stretching those preferences to trust someone outside of our comfort zone.⁣

To grow, develop & heal, you must trust your coach. You must also be able to separate your trust issues from their style of delivery. ⁣

Doing this could open up possibilities you didn’t know were available to you, because you always stay within your comfort zone of who you “trust.”⁣
